Man Fatally Injured, Possibly in Fight, Several People Detained

A man was fatally injured, possibly in a fight, early Wednesday in San Jacinto, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Police responded at 3:23 a.m. Dec. 4 to a report of a man down in the 300 block of East 7th Street, sheriff's Sgt. Jim Erickson said in a statement.

"Upon arrival the officers located a black male adult, later identified as Matthew Smith, 64 years old from San Jacinto, unresponsive lying in the roadway," Erickson said. "The officers summoned medical aid and Smith was taken to a local area hospital."

Smith succumbed to his injuries and died shortly after 4 a.m., Erickson said.

"Several subjects were detained by the officers," Erickson said. "Further investigation revealed Smith had likely been involved in a violent physical altercation inside of his residence and then made his way onto the street."

It was not clear Thursday whether anyone had been arrested in connection with Smith's death.

Anyone with more information was urged to call Investigator Espinoza at (760) 393-3500 or Sheriff's Dispatch at (951) 776-1099.
