BEAUMONT, CA — A Beaumont man learned the hard way not to mix household chemicals to make home-made weed killer Tuesday, according to the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department.

Shortly after 2 p.m., a 911 caller reported a man was "having difficulty breathing." Officials arrived in the 1000 Block of Massachusetts Avenue in Beaumont, where the man was suffering "minor injuries" after attempting to formulate the weed killer.

He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to fire spokesperson Karina Espinoza.

Hazardous Materials crews were sent to decontaminate the scene. During their work, Massachusetts Avenue was closed between 10th and 11th streets due to limited roadway access for responders, and was expected to reopen by 4:30 p.m., she said.

Mixing of chemicals can be dangerous, and is not advised, Espinoza said.
