RIVERSIDE, CA — A motorist who was killed after his compact car slammed into a wall beneath a freeway underpass near UC Riverside was identified Friday as a 29-year-old Long Beach man.

Nathan Lockwood was fatally injured at 12:25 a.m. Tuesday on MLK Boulevard, near the transition ramps for I-215, according to the Riverside Police Department.

Sgt. Emilio Angulo said that Lockwood was at the wheel of a Honda sedan going eastbound on MLK "at a high rate of speed" when he plowed into the retaining wall beneath the freeway.

Paramedics reached the location 10 minutes later and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved.

The investigation was turned over to the police department's Major Accident Investigation Team.

An autopsy was pending on Lockwood Friday.
