Man Killed When SUV Hits His Wheelchair

Authorities identify the transient killed while crossing the street in his wheelchair in Desert Hot Springs.

A man who was struck and killed by an SUV as he tried to cross a street in his wheelchair was identified today as a 51-year- old Desert Hot Springs resident.

The accident was reported at 8:09 p.m. Thursday on Palm Drive, south of Hacienda Avenue. Fred BamBusch was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the coroner’s office.

BamBusch had nearly made it across the street when he was clipped by a silver Toyota Rav 4, police Sgt. Larry Essex said.

The woman driving the SUV cooperated with investigators and there was no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, he said.
