RIVERSIDE, CA — Duane R. Roberts, a visionary entrepreneur behind Riverside's Mission Inn hotel and devoted husband, died Saturday, his wife, Kelly Roberts, announced over social media. He was days shy of his 89th birthday, she said.

Roberts, owner and CEO of the Mission Inn Hotel and Spa, bought the Mission Inn property in 1992. The property, constructed in 1876, was in danger of being demolished at that time, according to the hotel's website. He initiated a restoration project to preserve the building's original Spanish architecture, while adding modern amenities to attract more visitors. That adherence to history enabled the historic Mission Inn Hotel & Spa to recently win the Historic Hotels of America Award of Excellence for Best Historic Hotel with between 201 and 400 guest rooms.

Furthermore, the hotel became the center of downtown Riverside, hosting its annual Festival of Lights, a must-attend Christmas event for residents and visitors to Southern California.
