Murder Charge Filed Against Man Who Brought Injured Wife To Hospital

The victim, 21-year-old Savannah Encke, was seriously injured when she was brought to a Joshua Tree emergency room by her husband.

TWENTYNINE PALMS, CA — A Twentynine Palms man remained jailed Tuesday on suspicion of murder in the weekend death of his young wife, according to authorities.

Carlos Zamudio, 23, was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon after a formal charge of murder was filed against him.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, an investigation into Zamudio began at about 1:35 a.m. Sunday after deputies were summoned to Joshua Tree's Hi-Desert Medical Center regarding a severely injured woman in the emergency room.

The victim, 21-year-old Savannah Encke, was brought to the hospital by her husband, Zamudio, who had injuries to his face, the sheriff's department reported.

Despite medical treatment, Encke did not survive her injuries.

According to the sheriff's department narrative, investigators turned their attention to Zamudio and determined he "was responsible for the injuries" that led to his wife's death. The nature of those injuries was not disclosed.

Zamudio was arrested at the hospital and booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. He is being held without bail, jail records show.
