RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — A bill just signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom aims to protect undocumented college students from academic harm when affected by federal immigration actions.

Authored by Riverside County Sen. Sabrina Cervantes, Senate Bill 307 will require California State University and request the University of California to adopt policies to protect immigrant students.

For undocumented students who are detained, deported or unable to attend classes due to ICE activity, such measures would include a systemwide policy that addresses grades, administrative withdrawal and reenrollment.

Cervantes also authored another bill protecting immigrants and their children, SB 313, which was signed into law by Newsom. It will require the state to remove parental birthplaces on public birth certificates.

"SB 313 will protect parents’ personal information and address concerns about data misuse, enhancing privacy while preserving essential birth records," Cervantes wrote on X.
