Habitat for Humanity of the San Gorgonio Pass officials are seeking military veteran applicants for home ownership and their next orientation meeting is scheduled this evening, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday Aug. 22 at Banning United Methodist Church.
Selection criteria includes a need for adequate shelter, ability to pay, willingness to partner, and a minimum of one year living in the Pass area defined as Cabazon, Banning, Beaumont, Cherry Valley and Calimesa, the nonprofit's executive director Amy Minjares said.
The next orientation meeting after this evening's is scheduled 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday Aug. 24 at Banning United Methodist Church. The church is at 235 N. 2nd St., Banning.
A Casino Night fundraiser to help build or refurbish a home for a military family is scheduled 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday Oct. 11 at Albert Chatigny Community Recreation xCenter, 1310 Oak Valley Parkway in Beaumont. Tickets will be $25 at the door. To purchase tickets online visit www.habitatsgpa.org
San Gorgonio Pass Area HFH is billed as a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization.
"Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing," the nonprofit's website states. "The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.
"Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - 'sweat equity' - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses."
