RivCo Driver Killed In Crash After Fleeing Traffic Stop: Sheriff

Deputies were attempting to pull over the motorist for a possible DUI when he sped off and hit another car, officials said.

MORENO VALLEY, CA — A motorist who allegedly fled from a sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop for suspected drunken driving crashed and died at a Moreno Valley intersection, authorities said Thursday.

The deadly wreck happened about 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at Indian and Krameria avenues, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Sgt. Bryan De Loss said a motorcycle deputy spotted the suspect, whose identity has not been released, allegedly driving erratically in his SUV in the area of Dracaea Avenue and Heacock Street, prompting the patrolman to attempt to pull him over based on suspicions the man was under the influence.

"The driver of the Jeep failed to stop and a vehicle pursuit was initiated," De Loss said. "The pursuit traveled on surface streets to the intersection of Indian and Krameria, where the suspect failed to stop for a stop sign and collided with a Hyundai Santa Fe traveling west on Krameria."

The suspect's SUV overturned, and the Hyundai was significantly damaged, according to the sergeant.

He said paramedics arrived within a few minutes and attempted life- saving measures, but the suspect died at the scene.

The two occupants of the other vehicle suffered minor to moderate injuries and were treated at Riverside University Medical Center. They are recovering at home, De Loss said.

The intersection was shut down for several hours while a preliminary investigation was conducted.
