Rock-Throwing Suspect Shot, Killed By San Gorgonio Pass CHP Officer

As part of the investigation, Gilman Springs Road, from State Street to state Route 79, was closed for 12 hours.

SAN JACINTO, CA — A 12-hour shutdown of Gilman Springs Road that began late Sunday afternoon was due to a fatal shooting by a California Highway Patrol officer with the agency's San Gorgonio Pass Area office.

According to the CHP, the incident unfurled at about 4:48 p.m. when the agency's officers were called to the area of Gilman Springs Road, east of state Route 79, regarding a man throwing rocks at oncoming vehicles.

CHP officers tried to contact the man, but he started hurling rocks at them, according to the agency.

The officers used verbal commands and non-deadly force to stop the alleged assault, but the man "continued to advance toward" them, "at which point an officer-involved shooting occurred," the CHP reported.

The officers provided emergency medical aid to the man until paramedics arrived, according to the CHP. Despite the efforts, however, Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene.

No CHP officers were injured during the incident.

The Riverside County Force Investigation Detail is investigating the shooting.

As part of the investigation, Gilman Springs Road, from State Street to state Route 79, was closed in both directions until 4:45 a.m. Monday.
