Deputy Dies After Being Shot By IE Domestic Violence Suspect

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA — Law enforcement agencies across the Southland are grieving the loss of a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy who was killed Monday in the line of duty.

Deputy Andrew Nuñez died at an area hospital after being shot in the head by a domestic violence suspect, according to authorities.

During a press briefing Monday afternoon, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said, "We are embedded in sorrow. Unfortunately for this department, it happens way too often."

"Our hearts are heavy as we send our deepest condolences to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the family of Deputy Nuñez," the Hemet Police Department shared. "Deputy Nuñez paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to his community, and his bravery and dedication will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and all who serve alongside him."

Gov. Gavin Newsom said flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff in honor of the slain deputy.

"On behalf of all Californians, Jennifer and I extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Deputy Nunez," Newsom said in a statement. "His courage, compassion and dedication to protecting others reflect the finest traditions of law enforcement. We honor his life and service with gratitude; may his sacrifice never be forgotten.”

Monday's incident began around 12:37 p.m. when deputies were dispatched to the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive in Rancho Cucamonga regarding a report of an armed man threatening a woman.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they were immediately fired upon, according to the sheriff's department.

"One deputy was struck and was airlifted to a hospital," the agency reported.

The suspect fled on a motorcycle and led a police chase eastbound on Interstate 210. At about 1:35 p.m., after a high-speed pursuit, the suspect crashed at Campus Avenue, west of Etiwanda.

The man was ejected from his bike and was transported to a hospital with injuries. His identity was not released. An update on his condition was unavailable.
