Tombstone Maker, New Dance Studio, Proposed In Beaumont

Both requests will be heard during Wednesday's 6 p.m. Beaumont Planning Commission meeting.

BEAUMONT, CA — A request to open a dance studio in Beaumont is moving its way through the wheels of city government. It's the same scenario for a proposed engraving and monument manufacturing retailer that wants to open in the city.

Both requests will be heard during Wednesday's 6 p.m. Beaumont Planning Commission meeting.

The first proposal involves a conditional use permit application for Beaumont Dance Studio Academy at 709 Beaumont Avenue. The 1,350-square-foot site, where the now-closed Upscale Vapes once did business, is inside a strip mall that was constructed in the 1960s.

The studio would provide dance lessons, with hours of operation seven days a week, between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Rene Rivera is the project applicant, according to city documents.

Oaktree Engraving and Monuments is also looking for signoff from commissioners on its conditional use permit application for a showroom at 506 Wellwood Avenue. The project applicant, Corydon Johnson, owns the .18-acre Wellwood Avenue property that features a 1,973-square-foot building and storage area. The zoning on the property is Commercial Neighborhood, according to city documents.

The showroom would feature exhibits of different styles and materials for headstones, as well as a brochure to display available engraving lettering.

According to city documents, the engraving is performed with a sandblaster "with specific ventilation and collection of dust."

According to Oaktree's website, the company "has been providing the finest quality custom monuments and grave markers" since 1976.

The company will conduct engraving and monument manufacturing, along with retail sales, at the site. Operating hours are proposed for 8:30 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Wednesday's Beaumont Planning Commission meeting takes place at 550 E. Sixth Street. See the full meeting agenda here.
