Sewer line repairs and upgrades by Yucaipa Valley Water District on Live Oak Canyon Road south of Interstate 10 are taking longer than expected, and the road could remain closed through this weekend.

"We hope to have it open by Monday, maybe sooner," Engineering Manager Brent Anton said in a phone interview Thursday afternoon Aug. 1. "We'd rather say Monday and have it open earlier."

Just before 5 p.m., Anton said in an email, "We are planning to have the road open by the end of the weekend for Monday morning commute."

Earlier Thursday, Anton toured the stretch of Live Oak Canyon Road that is shut down with Redlands-Loma Linda Patch.

Anton showed where workers were installing permanent 12-inch pipe to replace a temporary above-ground line put in place since the leak on a pressurized sewer mainline was reported Tuesday July 16.

The leak was contained on the east side of Live Oak Canyon Road and did not get into the Live Oak wash on the west side of the road, Anton said.

A cost estimate for repairs, mitigation and upgrades was not available Thursday from the district.

On Wednesday July 31, the district issued the following statement:

On July 16, 2013, Yucaipa Valley Water District crews responded to a leaking pressurized sewer mainline on Live Oak Canyon Road, south of Interstate 10. The leak was promptly contained and reported to the Regional Water Quality Control Board. The affected area is not over a recharge zone and there are no public or private water wells in the immediate area.

An above ground, bypass pipeline was installed along Live Oak Canyon Road to eliminate the use of the pressurized pipeline in order to complete the repairs. As a result of the above ground bypass pipeline and construction activities, the roadway access on Live Oak Canyon Road has been restricted. Traffic detour signs are posted to help direct traffic. Emergency vehicles will have through access at all times.

In addition to repairing the existing pipeline, the Yucaipa Valley Water District Board of Directors authorized the installation of a replacement pipeline along Live Oak Canyon Road. The construction of this replacement pipeline will prolong the closure of Live Oak Canyon Road, but will minimize future unexpected impacts to the community and commuters in the future. The construction of the replacement pipeline is expected to cause the complete closure of Live Oak Canyon this week.

Yucaipa Valley Water District recognizes the impacts caused by this construction activity and is making every effort to reopen the roadway as soon as it is safe. Traffic flaggers will be onsite to maintain local traffic. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Your safety and that of our work crews is important. Please assist our safety efforts by obeying all construction signs and staying away from construction zones. For more information, contact the Yucaipa Valley Water District office at (909) 797-
