Opening Statements to Begin Thursday in Hutchinson Muder Trial

The sixth and final day of jury selection will begin Wednesday morning in the murder trial of Tyler James Hutchinson, the man accused in the 2009 beating death of Belmont resident Albert Korn.

San Mateo County Superior Judge Mark Forcum said he will maintain the previous schedule he set for the trial, with opening statements will be presented on Thursday morning. The defense attorney is James Thompson.

Hutchinson was caught in West Sacramento two days after allegedly robbing and beating the 88-year-old Korn in his home on Hallmark Drive, and driving away in Korn's 2004 Jaguar.

Originally deemed incomptent to stand trial, Hutchinson, 25, was later determined by doctors at the Atascadero and Napa state hospitals to be competent.

If convicted, Hutchinson would spend the rest of his life in prison without the chance of parole. The district attorney's office is not seeking the death penalty. The defendant is in custody on no bail status.

The trial is expected to last four to six weeks.
