Long Beach Man Killed While Helping Motorist

The Good Samaritan was struck as he tried to assist a truck driver on the freeway.

A Long Beach resident who pulled off the westbound (134) Ventura Freeway to help a pickup truck driver change a flat tire Saturday night was fatally struck by another motorist who veered into him, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man was identified late Sunday as Donald Bishop, 55, of Long Beach, coroner's Lt. Joe Bale said. The crash near Buena Vista Street was reported at 10:49 p.m. Saturday, CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos said. Bishop was walking back to his van when a 2008 Pontiac G6 going about 65 mph struck him and the van, another CHP officer said.

Debris from the impact also hit the pickup driver in the head, and he was taken to a hospital to be checked out, according to the CHP.
