Why Would Taxpayers Spend $1-5M On Courthouse?

Why was county courthouse OK'd without prisoner tunnel DeLong, Garcia, O'Donnell, Andrews now want city to pay for, at least in part? asks Councilwoman Schipske on LBReport.com.

Council member Gerrie Schipske shows in her personal blog that the tunnel, which many courthouses have to protect the public and isolate defendants who may be criminals, was included in original plans. She alleges that city management authorized a non-agendized $80,000 study to determine the cost's feasibility but the four have now agendized it before the $80,000 study is done, after the foundation concrete has been poured, and having not mentioned in any prior oil tax revenue discussions. The $1 Million expenditure is on Tuesday's city council agenda, notes LBReport.

In Schipske's blog, she asks:

"Why would the winning proposal not include this element? By not including it --was the winning bid lower than the other proposals -- now only to have it added after the fact?
Who was on the committee that selected the final design -- anyone from the City of Long Beach?"
