2017 Golden Globe Winners: 'La La Land' Reigns Supreme

See who took home awards at the star-studded 2017 Golden Globes ceremony.

La La Land,” a poetic ode to bygone movie musicals, dominated the 74th Golden Globes on Sunday, garnering a record seven trophies in all categories for which it was nominated, including the one for Best Comedy or Musical, Best Actor for Ryan Gosling, Best Actress for Emma Stone and Best Director and Screenwriter for Damien Chazelle.

The modern musical romance officially broke the previous record-holding number six, held by the biopic-drama “Midnight Express” (1978) and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975). “La La Land,” now an Oscar front-runner, also won Best Original Score for composer Justin Hurwitz and Best Original Song for lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

In terms of the drama categories, the awards were more widely distributed. However, the entire evening was ruled otherwise by surprises.

Despite six nominations, “Moonlight,” about a young African-American man’s journey into adulthood, only nabbed one trophy. Nevertheless, it was a big win —for Best Drama.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson scored Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Nocturnal Animals,” beating heavily favored Mahershala Ali of “Moonlight.” Viola Davis was named Best Supporting Actress in a drama for “Fences.”

Isabelle Huppert took home the Best Actress award for her role in “Elle,” beating favorite Natalie Portman of “Jackie.” Casey Affleck won Best Actor, the lone award scooped up by “Manchester by the Sea” despite its five nominations.

The TV segment of the awards night had several more surprises. HBO, in spite of its 14 nominations, the most of any network, went home empty-handed. Meanwhile, “Atlanta,” “The Night Manager” and “The Crown” received multiple trophies.

“Atlanta” won Best Comedy, while Donald Glover won for Best Comedic Actor for his performance in the show. Although the heavily favored “The People v. O.J. Simpson” snagged Best Miniseries and Best Actress for Sarah Paulson, “The Night Manager” scored better in every other acting category, including wins for Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman.

Netflix’s “The Crown” won Best TV Series in a Drama and Best Actress for Claire Foy for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the show, besting favorites like “Games of Thrones” and “Stranger Things.”

Last but not least, Meryl Streep was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award. Her acceptance speech echoed an impassioned plea relating to the recent election. “Take your broken heart, make it into art,” Streep said, quoting and honoring the late Carrie Fisher.
