This was a year that was chock full of surprises and heartbreaks.
This year was full of ups and downs, and full of surprises.
In California, the state started 2016 off in mourning over the San Bernardino Massacre and ended with the unexpected deaths of "Star Wars" icon Carrie Fisher and her mother, Hollywood icon Debbie Reynolds. But, along the way, there were some uplifting stories, such as a son reuniting with his mother after being kidnapped for 20 years and a community coming together to combat hate.
