Beverly Hills Continues Ban Of Shared Mobility Devices

The Beverly Hills City Council voted 4-1 to continue prohibiting shared mobility devices within City limits until January 2021.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA — The Beverly Hills City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday to continue the prohibition of certain shared mobility devices, including electric scooters, within City limits until January 2021.

The ordinance prohibits the shared mobility devices from being placed in any public right-of-way or on public property; used in any public-right-of-way or on public property; or offered for use anywhere in the city, the City of Beverly Hills press release said.

The Beverly Hills Police Department will continue to enforce their zero-tolerance policy for using shared mobility devices, which will include impounding the devices and fines.

Over the last year and a half, the Beverly Hills Police and Fire Departments have responded to multiple accidents involving shared mobility devices, several of which resulted in serious injuries. City crews have also removed hundreds of scooters from sidewalks and streets that obstructed traffic and created a hazard, the City said.

City staff said they are continuing to explore a pilot project involving shared mobility devices to promote their safe use.
