Beverly Hills ballerinas Billie Dane(13) and sisters Elle (14) and Jenne (16) Shim prepare to perform at the Eli and Edythe Broad Stage in Santa Monica in Westside Ballet of Santa Monica’s “Masters of Movement: Ballet through the Centuries”—a program of classical, neoclassical, and contemporary works, showcasing the range and talent of the nonprofit company’s pre-professional dancers, alumni, and guest artists, Memorial Day weekend at the Eli & Edythe Broad Stage.

On Friday, May 26, the performance company hosts its annual Soirée special event, including cocktails, appetizers, awards, and one-night-only guest artist performances. Andrea Laššáková and alumnus Adrian Blake Mitchell will dance Westside’s Premiere of “After the Rain” by acclaimed choreographer Christopher Wheeldon; and Maté Szentes and alumna Lyrica Woodruff will perform George Balanchine’s dazzling “Stars & Stripes”.

Repertoire also includes a suite from Marius Petipa’s “Raymonda” and a newly commissioned contemporary work and “Color of Spring” by Vanessa Van Wormer with live music. A 10th grader at Marlborough School, Jenne will dance in both.

Saturday’s Spring Showcase includes Westside Premiere of George Balanchine’s “Emeralds Pas de Trois”; “Handel Dances” by resident choreographer Sophie Monat; and concluding with audience favorite “A Chorus Line”. Saturday’s showcase reprises divertissements from “Raymonda,” as well as Ms. Wormer’s piece.

Elle, in 8th grade at Beverly Hills Vista School, is enthusiastically looking forward to performing in the Garland Dance from “Sleeping Beauty. “The music makes me so happy and it’s probably the prettiest I have ever danced to.”

New to Westside Ballet, Billie will dance in a beautiful Polka inspired by Westside founder Yvonne Mounsey. “I am at my happiest when I am dancing,” she says ballet is “like oxygen” for her. “Studying ballet has taught me so much about discipline, commitment and how to make the perfect bun!”
