Aman resorts around the world attract a celebrity clientele, including Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and George and Amal Clooney, according to the Los Angeles Times. There are 34 Aman resorts in 20 countries, including Italy, Thailand and Greece.
Some 15 Aman resorts are located in or close to sites protected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, such as the ruins at Epidaurus in Greece and Sri Lanka's 17th-century Galle Fort.
Alagem Capital and partner Cain International bought the highly sought-after land in 2018 for $445 million, the Los Angeles Times reported. Alagem Capital owns the Beverly Hilton next door. Alagem will bring the two properties together into one campus to create a 17.4-acre "gateway for Beverly Hills," Chief Executive Beny Alagem told the Los Angeles Times. The project will include some changes to the Beverly Hilton.
The plans, which were made public in 2020, were designed to showcase gardens designed by landscape architect Mark Rios, the man behind Grand Park in downtown Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Times. The entire complex will include 12.7 acres of open space: eight acres of gardens, just over half of which will be open to the public, according to city documents.
The Beverly Hills City Council approved the $2 billion project in 2021 in a 4-1 vote. Councilmember John Mirisch voted no and strongly opposed the project's lack of affordable housing, the Beverly Hills Courier reported.
"The announcement of Aman Beverly Hills further demonstrates our commitment to this strategy and long-term vision. Staying true to our DNA and the revered Aman lifestyle, Aman Beverly Hills, nestled in its expansive botanical gardens, captures the legacy and heritage of Aman while connecting our guests with fascinating urban environments," Doronin said in a statement.
