Metro Moves Forward with Tunnel Under Beverly Hills High School After Victory in Court

A federal judge upheld the Federal Transit Administration's approval of the project to expand the Purple Line to Century City.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA — Metro's controversial Purple Line extension, which includes a tunnel under Beverly Hills High School, can now continue after a judge Friday upheld the federal government approval of the subway extension.

The ruling means Metro can forward with finalizing a $1.5 billion federal grant and loan to pay for the second phase of the project that will extend the Purple Line to Century City.

Though, opponents of the project got some reprieve. The judge also ordered Metro to redo parts of the project environmental studies, including the seismic studies near Beverly Hills High. Metro said it has already begun the work on that.

Both the city of Beverly Hills and Beverly Hills Unified School District are against the tunnel and dispute the need for it. Metro says the tunnel was needed to avoid an earthquake fault along Santa Monica Boulevard.
