Burlingame Student Wins $3200 Scholarship
The scholarship was awarded by the National Honor Society.
BURLINGAME, CA — One Burlingame student — Lillian Shapona of Mercy High School — has been awarded a 2024 scholarship from the National Honor Society. Shapona has been named a Semi-Finalist, with an award of $3200.
Three of the 25 finalists are from California, each receiving a $5,000 scholarship with the chance to win the top scholarship of $25,000.. The closest to the Bay Area is a student in Modesto, in the Central Valley. The other two are Southern California residents.
The National Honor Society has been around for over 100 years. Beyond scholarship, the chapters emphasize service, leadership, and character with some 1.4 million students participating.

Each year, the average chapter contributes:
- 1,000 hours of school/community service
- $26,000 in charitable donations
- 1,000 pounds of food to local, state, and national causes
- 100 pints of blood
