Mills-Peninsula Celebrates One Year of Service

The Mills-Peninsula Medical Center in Burlingame opened its doors one year ago.

Tuesday marks the one-year anniversary of the in Burlingame, which opened on May 15, 2011, replacing the adjacent Peninsula Medical Center.

Looking back at this day last year, patients were individually transferred to the new building beginning at 7 a.m. Emergency room visitors and expectant mothers were directed to the new hospital, as well.

Hospital employees had prepared by practicing a moving drill 10 days earlier. Twenty volunteers acted as patients with different medical conditions and needs, so doctors and personnel were able to practice briefing patients on what to expect and keep them safe during the move.

The new medical center has had a busy year. According to the Mills-Peninsula news website, in the past year: 1,956 babies were born, 44,738 emergencies were answered, 1,358,149 lab tests were conducted, 10,532 surgeries were done, 18,787 rehabilitation treatments were given and 314,738 outpatient services were performed.

The interior of the 241-bed facility was designed by Anderson Brulé Architects, which worked with doctors and hospital staff to create a calming and welcoming environment for patients and families.

Mills-Peninsula is part of the Sutter Health network. The demolition of the old Peninsula Medical Center building is nearing completion, with about 80 percent of materials being recycled or salvaged. The land will be used for a 300-spot parking structure.
