Question of the Week: School Funding

How important is it for the community to help fund Burlingame schools?

With the Burlingame School District facing deep budget cuts, the Burlingame Community for Education Foundation (BCE), PTA councils and a collaborative effort between the two, Game On, have stepped in to raise funds for the district.

The district board members have been discussing for months how to slash $800,000 from the 2011-2012 school year budget, an amount necessitated by a drop in state funding.

With the state budget cutting into education, more and more communities have been forced to pick up the slack to ensure their students receive a high-quality education.

How important is it to you that the community help the school district in hard financial times? Do you feel that, when the state doesn't deliver, it is the responsibility of community members to step in? Do you feel only parents should participate? Have you donated to BCE or Game On? What other ideas do you have for helping the schools raise money and cut spending?

Burlingame will be participated in "Wake Up California" on May 24, a state-wide day of raising awareness about the budget crisis public schools are facing. A 9 a.m. rally is planned at City Hall.
