• Killer, rapist in 1984 Burney cold case gets life in prison (redding.com) — A man who lived in Burney at the time of a 1984 killing and sexual assault near Burney High School has been sentenced to life in prison without parole. Investigators used modern DNA techniques to match him to evidence from the long-unsolved case, bringing long-awaited closure for the victim’s family and the surviving teen who spoke at sentencing.
   

• Earthquake of magnitude 2.3 registered close to Burney, CA on Dec. 17 (sacbee.com) — A small 2.3-magnitude earthquake shook an area about seven miles west of Burney early Wednesday at 1:21 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. While quakes of this size are rarely damaging, residents are encouraged to report what they felt and review basic safety steps like drop, cover, and hold on to prepare for future shaking.
   

• LaMalfa Bill to Transfer Land to Pit River Passes House (gridleyherald.com) — Land known as the Four Corners, located between Burney and Fall River Mills, is a step closer to being transferred from federal ownership to the Pit River Tribe after the House passed H.R. 2400. The tribe hopes to build an interpretive center there, strengthen stewardship of their ancestral lands, and preserve cultural traditions tied to this important local landmark.
