CALABASAS, CA — Legend has it that when Spanish officer Juan Bautista de Anza was traveling through the area, his wagon full of pumpkins overturned, giving way to a pumpkin patch several months later.

That legend helped give Calabasas its name — calabaza means gourd in Spanish. It's part of why Calabasas each year throws a Pumpkin Festival at Juan Bautista de Anza Park.

This year's festival is set for Sunday, Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Planned are a marketplace with over 75 vendors, inflatable rides and games, a giant slide, live reptile and bug shows, photos with Halloween characters, car displays and food trucks.

And no Pumpkin Festival would be complete without a pumpkin patch, pumpkin carving, pumpkin pies, pumpkin painting, pumpkin beer and much, much more surrounding the seasonal gourd.
