Calabasas Students To Perform At New York's Carnegie Hall

Thirty-one local students will sing at the world-famous venue.

CALABASAS, CA -- Thirty-one students from Calabasas will take the global stage next spring.

The students, members of the Round Meadow Elementary Chorus, will join two other elementary schools in April to perform at the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City.

“To have an elementary school perform at Carnegie Hall is a big opportunity, said Dianne Meyer, the school’s musical director. “This is very unusual for young children.”

Meyer said her students were selected after she reached out to MidAmerica Productions, the organizer of the April 28 concert.

The students, who range in age from 10 to 11, will perform “Mass of the Children,” a 35-minute-long song written by English composer John Rutter. They'll also be guided by world-renown conductor Greg Gilpin.

“The kids are just beside themselves for this opportunity,” said Tiffany Cohen, whose daughter will perform at the concert. “They understand the scope of what this means. They cannot stop thinking or talking about it.”

But before the students can get to New York City, they must raise money.

Meyer said the group needs to raise $2,500 per student to send the chorus to the Big Apple in the spring. The students plan to host fundraisers until the April date to earn enough money for the trip, Cohen said.
