'Makerfest': Viewpoint Students Build With Their Parents

CALABASAS, CA — Viewpoint School students and parents tinkered with robots and rockets during this year's "Makerfest," an annual event where parents check out the school's tech-focused "Innovation Space."

The fourth annual "Makerfest" ran from Tuesday to Thursday, a sweet return to in-person after the event was hosted virtually last year. Students from transitional kindergarten to fifth grade showed their parents the school's "Innovation Space," where the kids explore coding, robotics and other tech activities.

Students walked their parents through 31 booths including Valentine's Day themed activities like "LEGO Love Monster" construction, rocket launching, car racing and more. The booths were led by Viewpoint high school students and employees, according to a news release from the school.

Many of the materials used in Makerfest were made on-site with the "Innovation Space's" laser cutter and 3-D printer, "Innovation Space" teacher Lisa Kessler said in a news release. Lower school students helped make some of the materials with a coding program.

“For us, the highlight is seeing our young ‘makers’ sharing in the joy of making with their families ... It is empowering for them to see their work being enjoyed by their peers and their families,” Kessler said.
