Nun Dies in Car Crash After Riding with a U.S. Ambassador
Sister Mary Campbell died in a crash Wednesday after the car she was riding in, driven by Douglas Kmiec, the U.S. ambassador to Malta, veered of Mulholland Highway into a ditch.

A car that was being driven by Douglas Kmiec, the U.S. ambassador to Malta, crashed into a ditch off of Mulholland Highway on Wednesday, killing a 74-year-old nun who was a passenger in the vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The accident was reported at 1:29 p.m. on Wednesday and occurred east of Stokes Canyon Road in unincorporated LA County, said Leland Tang, a CHP officer.
Kmiec was driving westbound on Mulholland when his 2009 Hyundai Accent veered off the road and crashed into a drainage ditch, Tang said.

Tang said he does not know why Kmiec lost control of the vehicle.
Sister Mary Campbell of Our Lady of Malibu Catholic Church died at the scene, he added.

Kmiec and another passenger, Monsignor John Sheridan, who is also of Our Lady of Malibu Catholic Church, were airlifted to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
As of Thursday, Sheridan remained hospitalized with serious injuries, while Kmiec was being treated for moderate injuries, Tang said.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, he added.
