THOUSAND OAKS, CA — Rise Southern Biscuits & Righteous Chicken, a breakfast and lunch joint with North Carolina roots, will open its first West Coast restaurant Saturday in Thousand Oaks — pledging to introduce Californians to the "best dang biscuits in the biz.”

Founded in 2012 in Durham, N.C., the eatery sticks to its Southern roots, offering fried green tomatoes, okra, grits, beignets, Nashville-hot chicken, biscuit-and-gravy entrees, plus a classic chicken on a biscuit with bacon and pimento cheese.

Rise's menu also is chockful of such lighthearted-named dishes as: "Sweet Country Blues" (sausage on a glazed blueberry biscuit); "Which Came First?" (biscuit, gravy, chicken and a fried egg); and the "Tree Hugger" (biscuit, gravy and veggie sausage).

It is the first of five locations that franchisee Bill Propster has planned for Santa Clarita and the San Fernando Valley, the company said.

Rise management says the chain is a mix "old school, new school and our school," with a menu that rotates its chicken sandwiches, biscuit and donut offerings "to keep the menu fresh and intriguing."
