Fatal South Bay Freeway Crash Involving Pedestrian Under Investigation

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — A fatal crash involving a pedestrian victim early Friday morning that snarled traffic on a major freeway is under investigation, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred at around 5:15 a.m. Friday on the southbound lanes of Highway 101 north of McKee Road, according to the CHP.

The pedestrian, who for unknown reasons entered the lanes of traffic from the right shoulder, was struck in the No. 3 lane by a Chevrolet Silverado traveling approximately 65 mph, the CHP said.

The pedestrian ran across the southbound lanes in an easterly direction, across the No. 4 lane and into the No. 3 lane, directly in front of the Chevrolet Silverado, the CHP said.

The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado made an abrupt turning movement to the left but was unable to stop the right side of the vehicle from side swiping the pedestrian, the CHP said.

After this first impact, an unknown vehicle traveling southbound in the No. 4 lane at an unknown speed collided with the pedestrian, according to the CHP.

This crash is still under investigation.

The identity of the decedent is being withheld until they have been positively identified, and the next of kin has been notified.
