International SCC Visitor Infected With Measles: Public Health

The county Public Health Dept. would like the public to review the following list of places where the visitor went between March 16-23.

SAN JOSE, CA - A case of measles has been spotted by the Santa Clara County Public Health Department in an international traveler visiting the region.

Individuals who are not immune to measles and who visited the following sites below on the dates and times indicated may be at risk of developing measles due to exposure, the health department announced Tuesday.

People present at these sites who are not immune need to watch for symptoms of the illness, which may surface in one to three weeks, according to county health officials.

Most of the county population received two doses of measles vaccine, MMR, as children and are protected. However, parents of unvaccinated children, adults who have done without and those with weakened immune systems are advised to review the list of sites and times individuals may have been exposed below.

Children at risk may include infants who are too young to receive the vaccine, children who cannot receive a measles vaccine due to a weakened immune system or other unvaccinated children.

“The good news is that most people living in Santa Clara County have been vaccinated and are protected from measles. However, if you or a family member are not immune to measles and you think you were exposed to measles, watch closely for fever, cough, red eyes, runny nose and a rash that starts on the face. Call your doctor right away if you develop any of these symptoms,” said Dr. Sara Cody, county health officer and public health department director.

The person with measles is an adult exposed to measles overseas, not in the San Francisco Bay Area. The person’s measles vaccination status is unverified. The individual was hospitalized as a result of the illness.

This case of measles is not connected to the cluster of three cases in the Bay Area earlier this month. Two doses of the MMR vaccine is the best protection against the measles. Measles immunizations are available at healthcare providers, local pharmacies or health clinics. The county public health department offers immunizations, which are usually covered by insurance: https://www.sccgov.org/sites/phd/services/IzClinic/Pages/iz-clinic-home.aspx.
