Man Who Died In Crash Splitting Vehicle In Two Identified

CHP reported the Scotts Valley man was swerving and driving onto both shoulders before going off the road and into a tree off SR-17.

SAN JOSE, CA -- A man killed in unincorporated Santa Clara County near Santa Cruz on Thursday has been identified as 60-year-old Dan Miller of Scotts Valley, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.

The crash was reported at 5:31 p.m. on southbound Highway 17 in the southern area of the county. A driver in a blue Toyota FJ Cruiser was reportedly swerving, speeding and unable to stay in his lane.

According to the CHP, the driver was veering into both shoulders of the freeway while driving at a very high speed, and crashed into a tree minutes later just south of Redwood Estates. Officers said they arrived at the scene to find the vehicle had split in half after the impact with the tree and landed on its roof.

Miller died at the scene, according to the CHP.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
