Santa Clara Co. Inmate Dies Receiving Medical Aid: Sheriff's

The inmate brought into custody in San Jose accused of drug crimes complained of pain and died in about a week at Valley Medical Center.

SAN JOSE, CA — An inmate died at Valley Medical Center Friday morning after being transported there about a week before when the 58-year-old man complained pain and "an unknown illness," the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department reported.

The man was booked in the Elmwood Correctional Facility on June 25 due to several warrants for possession of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and lewd conduct.

Three nights later at 8:21 p.m., the inmate was transferred to the Santa Clara County Main Jail medical unit but within an hour medical staff requested go by ambulance to Valley
Medical Center for further treatment.

The inmate was pronounced dead at 7:27 a.m.

The joint investigation conducted by the sheriff’s office, along with the Santa Clara County District Attorney and Medical Examiner, indicated no signs of foul play. The case had determined the man "died of pre-existing medical conditions," the sheriff's department added.
