Suspect Arrested In Fatal South Bay DUI Crash: CHP

The crash occurred around 10:50 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 680 just north of Berryessa Road, the CHP said.

SAN JOSE, CA – An East Bay man was arrested late Sunday night in connection with a fatal South Bay hit-and-run crash, the California Highway Patrol said.

Martin Ramirez Salazar, 49 of Fremont, was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run and driving under the influence of alcohol, the CHP said.

The crash occurred around 10:50 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 680 just north of Berryessa Road, the CHP said.

Salazar was the driving a GMC Sierra at a high rate of speed in the number two lane when he collided into the back of a Ford Focus, the CHP said.

The Focus lost control, turned to the left, across the number one lane and the left-hand shoulder, and crashed into the concrete barrier within the center divider, the CHP said.

After the collision, the driver of the GMC Sierra was seen fleeing the scene of this crash, the CHP said.

He was later contacted at his address in Fremont, where San Jose CHP Officers arrested him, the agency said.

The driver of the Ford Focus was pronounced dead at the scene.

The release of their identity will be coordinated through the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's Office.

The investigation is ongoing.
