It's not every day a Queen Anne-style Victorian is the site of an Easter Egg hunt - especially one with 5,000 eggs and 13 other surprises.

SAN JOSE, CA -- Sarah Winchester had a thing for the No. 13 with all her eccentric behavior. With that, her Winchester mansion named after the firearm magnate plays to the tradition as the setting for a large-scale, bizarre Easter egg hunt staged April 20 at 10:30 a.m. at this home filled with intrigue.

The Winchester Mystery House's "Hoppening" features 5,000 eggs to find -- including 13 golden surprises hidden in the Victorian Garden for this free event located at 525 S. Winchester Boulevard in San Jose.

The eight-bedroom farm house appears as an ideal setting for Halloween with its doors that open to nowhere, but like the house that's full of surprises - Easter has a few of its own in the basket.

Winchester, the widow of William Wirt Winchester, kept the architectural wonder under construction for 38 years. It's believed that was her form of therapy having undergone tragedy.

"There was a method to her madness. People cope in various ways," Winchester House spokesman Jacob Gospodnetich told Patch. "It became Sarah's project house."

Beyond its peculiar nature with its architectural oddities, the California Historical Landmark is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has become a tourist attraction in the South Bay.

Hundreds of people are expected to show up for the "Hoppening" Easter Egg hunt, so three zones will divide age groups.

Other activities include a bouncy house, photo booth and Glitter Tattoo station, along with sweets and treats. Mr Jelly Belly will also be "in the house." And for pet lovers, the South Bay Rabbit Rescue will be on hand.

Food and drinks are available for purchase on site.
