Former UCLA Student Sentenced to 180 Days in Jail for Sexual Battery

A former UCLA student government leader pleaded no contest to sexual battery of a female student and is expected to serve a 180- day jail term, city prosecutors reported today.

Omar Arce, 22, entered his no contest plea to seven counts of sexual battery, four counts of battery and one count of false imprisonment, according to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office.

Arce is set to be formally sentenced in a year. Meanwhile, he is required to stay away from the UCLA campus -- from which he had already been expelled -- and to stay away from the victim, abstain from alcohol consumption and stay away from places where alcohol is the chief item for sale.

Arce could face a year in jail and a requirement to register as a sex offender if he fails to comply, according to the City Attorney’s Office.

The case stemmed from allegations made by a female student earlier this year against Arce, who was a member of the university’s Undergraduate Students Association Council and served as a community service commissioner.

Arce was initially arrested in April by UCLA police. He was taken into custody again Tuesday at the Airport Branch Courthouse in Los Angeles, but is expected to be released to await formal sentencing.
