Foundation Established in Memory of UCLA Football Player

Investigators are awaiting the results of toxicological tests on Pasquale's body, which is routine in traffic collisions, Orange County sheriff's Lt. Jeff Hallock said.

The death of the 20-year-old redshirt freshman walk-on has hit the UCLA team hard.

"It's a very tragic time, a very difficult time," Bruins coach Jim Mora said today at his regularly scheduled weekly news conference. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. That's the most important thing."

In what would be his lone game with UCLA, Pasquale played at the end of the season-opening 58-20 victory over Nevada Aug. 31 at the Rose Bowl.

"Nick was a young man that had a tremendous influence on our locker room," Mora said.

An emotional Mora walked out of the news conference after admonishing a video camera operator for talking on his cellphone. He later answered questions from reporters who cover the team.

In lieu of meals, flowers and gifts, donations can be made to the foundation created in Pasquale's memory.

Donations to the Nick Pasquale Foundation will support athletes who demonstrate extreme effort and leadership on their teams, charitable groups influencing sports and athletes and athletes needing grants or scholarships to pursue their dreams.

Pasquale, a football standout at San Clemente High School, was struck by the car about 1:30 p.m. Sunday on Camino de Dos Mares, west of Calle Nuevo in San Clemente, Hallock said.

The motorist, who had been driving a Mercedes-Benz sedan, stayed at the scene and was not charged with any crime or infraction, Hallock said, adding that there were no signs on the part of the driver that drugs or alcohol played a part in the collision.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at San Clemente Presbyterian Church.
