UCLA Gets $12M Grant for Heart, Lung and Blood Disease Research

UCLA and UC Irvine are among five University of California medical campuses that will share a $12 million grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, it was announced Friday.

The award recognizes the UC system's potential to convert leading-edge discoveries into products that benefit patients.

The research, to be based at UCLA, will have four goals:

• Engage UC heart, lung and blood disease innovators in entrepreneurial pursuits through education, training and mentorship programs.
• Solicit and select technologies with high commercial potential that address unmet medical needs or significant scientific opportunity.
• Tailor promising technologies to meet industry requirements to help their development into commercial products that improve patient care and health.
• Create a high-performing infrastructure that will serve as a model to academic research centers.

Other UC medical campuses participating in the research are in Davis, San Diego and San Francisco.
