Students from Fedde and Haskell Middle Schools Earn Awards at History Day L.A. 2012

A group of local middle school students leave their mark at History Day L.A. 2012.

Students from in Cerritos and Fedde Academy in Hawaiian Gardens left lasting impressions on judges at the History Day L.A. 2012 competition at Azusa Pacific University earlier this month.

History Day L.A. is part of a national program that encourages students to prepare posters, exhibits, papers, websites, performances, and documentary presentations on a historical theme -- this year's theme being Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History.

The following awards were given to students who participated in this year's event:

  • Kennedy Miller of Haskell Middle School received "First Alternate" recognition in the Junior Individual Documentary Division for her submission "Revolution of Play-Doh." Teacher: Elaine Lima
  • Fedde Middle School students Ashley Yanez, Cynthia Lopez, Guadalupe Macias, Karla Cardenas and Nia Mc Clinton received top honors in the Junior Group Exhibit Competition for their submission "Childhood Lost and Found: Revolution and Reform During the Industrial Revolution." Teacher: Chad Laine. 
  • Fedde Middle School students Keith Alarcon, Ana Pastrana, Miguel Martinez, Stephany Ruiz and Mikayla Williams received top honors in the Junior Group Exhibit Competition for their submission "The People's Cry for Change: The French Revolution ... From Fear to Reform." Teacher: Chad Laine. 
  • Fedde Middle School students Alex Rosales, Jocelyn Arias, Iriana Rocha and Deseree Mejian received top honors in the Junior Group Performance Division for their submission "Information Revolution: Revolution and Reform Through Movable Type." Teacher: Chad Laine. 

These projects were judged by community members and social science professionals.

Winners of the History Day L.A. contest are now eligible to compete at the National History Day – California contest. In June, winners from the state competition move on to the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest at the University of Maryland at College Park, where the best National History Day projects from across the country, American Samoa, Guam, International Schools and Department of Defense Schools in Europe all meet to compete.

Participation in History Day L.A. provides opportunities for students to meet content standards and improve academic achievement. It also helps the youth develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, research and reading skills, oral and written communication and presentation skills, self esteem and confidence, and a sense of responsibility and involvement in the democratic process.
