With assistance from Nevada County Search and Rescue, police searched the four-mile stretch of Highway 49 between Downieville and Goodyears Bar, where Clark was known to frequently walk.

Police also searched the area surrounding his residence, including the wooded terrain behind his home, and noted significant bear activity. Neighbors have also reported recent mountain lion activity in that area.

On Nov. 14, police expanded the search and found clothing and personal items belonging to Clark.

Based on the investigation and items recovered, police said they now believe Clark "likely suffered a medical emergency near his home that incapacitated him or resulted in his death. Evidence further indicates he was likely dragged from the area by a bear or mountain lion."
