2 Fatalities Reported In Head-On Collision In East Contra Costa County

Witnesses reported one of the cars caught fire, the California Highway Patrol said.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — Two people died in a three-vehicle crash Monday morning near Brentwood, the California Highway Patrol said.

The fatal crash was first reported at 6:37 a.m. on Vasco Road just south of Walnut Boulevard.

The CHP's preliminary investigation indicated a silver Honda Fit, with one occupant, and a silver Nissan Altima, with one occupant, were traveling southbound on Vasco Road while a gray Acura Integra, also with one occupant, was traveling northbound on Vasco Road. The Nissan collided into the rear of the Honda then crossed into the northbound lane and collided head-on with the Acura.

Witnesses reported the Nissan caught fire and a good Samaritan helped extinguish the fire.

The driver of the Nissan and the driver of the Acura were pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said.

The driver of the Honda was taken to a hospital for injuries believed to be minor.

Vasco Road was blocked in both directions but was reopened around 9:30 a.m. Monday.
