Longtime Pittsburg Police Officer Dies; Served Community For 26 Years

Officer Jeff Kessler, who battled cancer, was known for his "big smile, quick wit and willingness to assist anyone in need."

PITTSBURG, CA — A longtime Pittsburg police officer died following a battle with cancer.

"With a heavy heart, we inform our community of the passing of Pittsburg Police Officer Jeff Kessler," the Pittsburg Police Department said Tuesday in a statement posted to social media. "Jeff had undergone treatment for cancer in late 2021 and could not return to work due to his medical condition. Unfortunately, Jeff passed away at home on May 27, 2023."

Kessler served the Pittsburg community for 26 years, from March 24, 1997, until his death last week. Kessler worked on various assignments and was a department trainer and instructor for most of his career.

He worked as a patrol officer, a school resource officer, a detective, and a narcotics detective. He also served as Marine Patrol and on the Neighborhood Policing Team and was recently appointed to the department’s Outreach Team. Kessler was also a member of the department's Special Response Tactical — SWAT— Unit for over 19 years, serving as part of the entry team and as a sniper.

"Those who knew Jeff knew that working in law enforcement and helping others were some of his prouder moments," Pittsburg police said. "He was known for his big smile, quick wit, and willingness to assist anyone in need. Officer Jeff Kessler’s selfless dedication to the Pittsburg Police Department and the members of this community will be missed. Please keep Jeff’s family, friends, and work family here in Pittsburg in your thoughts and prayers."
