Safeway Store Evacuated; Gas Leak Turns Out To Be Freon

One employee was hospitalized because of the incident at a Safeway store in Pittsburg.

PITTSBURG, CA — A Safeway store was evacuated Monday when firefighters responded to a report of a gas leak.

The incident started around noon Monday at the Safeway on Bailey Road. Upon arrival, Con Fire determined the fumes were from Freon.

The grocery store was immediately evacuated, Con Fire said.

One employee experienced difficulty breathing and was taken to a hospital.

Freon is a trademarked type of chemical used as refrigerants, propellants and solvents.

A store employee said the store was still closed at 2:45 p.m. and the employee wasn't sure when it would reopen.
