Coronado Officer Hurt After Chase That Reaches Speeds of 110 MPH

A Coronado police officer received minor injuries early Monday in a high-speed chase from Glorietta Boulevard to state Route 54 as he pursued a man suspected of driving a stolen vehicle.

The officer spotted the man, Desmond Moses, in the 800 block of Glorietta shortly before 2 a.m., said police spokeswoman Lea Corbin. The officer ran the plates on the black Honda Civic Moses was driving and records showed it had been stolen.

Moses did not stop, Corbin said, leading the officer on a chase to southbound Interstate 5 that at times reached speeds of 110 mph. The driver then attempted to go eastbound on Route 54, only to crash and exit the Honda.

The officer swerved into a railing to avoid hitting the Honda and Moses, who Corbin said immediately attempted to flee on foot across the highway.

A Chula Vista police canine unit found Moses hiding in the bushes beneath the freeway at about 2:30 a.m. National City police, a San Diego police helicopter and the California Highway Patrol aided Coronado police in the search.

The officer was taken to UCSD Medical Center, treated and released.

Moses, 35, is charged with vehicle theft, evading officers and receiving stolen property. The suspect also had an outstanding warrant for a previous vehicle theft, Corbin said.

He is expected in court Wednesday for an arraignment.
