Drone Malfunctions and Strikes San Diego-Based Ship, Hurting Two
The sailors were not seriously injured and the USS Chancellorsville remained capable of operations, but would return to San Diego to have the damage assessed.

An aerial target drone malfunctioned and struck theΒ San Diego-based USS Chancellorsville, which damaged the ship and left twoΒ sailors with minor burns, Navy officials said.
The incident occurred at about 1:25 p.m. Saturday as the crew theΒ Ticonderoga-class guided-missileΒ missile cruiser was conducting a radar tracking exercise during routineΒ training off the Southern California coast, according to U.S. Third FleetΒ Deputy Public Affairs Officer Lt. Lenaya Rotklein.
TheΒ droneΒ was being controlled remotely from Point Mugu at Naval Base
Ventura County, 10News reported.
Two sailors were treated for minor burns, but no one was seriouslyΒ injured, Rotklein said.
According to Rotklein, the USS Chancellorsville, while it remainedΒ capable of operations, would return to its homeport in San Diego to have theΒ damage assessed.
Navy officials were looking into the cause of the drone malfunction, Rotklein said.
