Apple Announces New iPhones, iPads and More: What To Know

Cut through the clutter: Here are the essentials about Apple's new iPhones, iPads and more from the company's Cupertino event Monday.

The word of the day was smaller.

After going big with its last two iterations, Apple announced that its new iPhones and iPads are shrinking.

The iPhone SE, as it's being called, will be just four inches long but contain many of the key features of the iPhone 6 and 6S. The company also announced that its iPad Pro would be downsizing, along with a smattering of other new software and hardware.

iPhone

The iPhone SE will be smaller and cheaper than the current iPhone 6S and have much of the same functionality.

It will have the same processing chip and camera as the 6S along with the fingerprint-scanning Touch ID and Apple pay capabilities.

The phone will start at $399 for 16GB of storage and go up to $499 for 64GB.

iPad

Along the same vein, the new iPad Pro will be significantly smaller with many of the same feature.

The new iPad Pro will be 9.7 inches, compared to the original 12.9-inch size. It will have an upgraded camera and what Apple calls the brightest screen on the market.

It will be priced at $599 for the 32GB model, $749 for 128GB and $899 for a new 256GB edition.

iOS

A new version of Apple's mobile operating system will be available Monday as a free upgrade, and it includes a feature that should help you sleep better after staring at your screen at night.

"Night shift," as it is being called, will shift the colors on your screen to the "warmer" end of the spectrum. "Cooler" colors like blue and purple have been shown to negatively affect sleep for people who have been looking at those colors on a screen.

Original story below

CUPERTINO, CA — Apple is expected to announce a new iPhone at an event today, Monday, at the company's headquarters in Cupertino.

The event will get under way at 10 a.m. PDT/1 p.m. EDT. You can watch the Apple announcement live here in a Safari browser on Mac or Microsoft Edge on Windows. It will also stream live on Apple TV.

Patch will also have live updates of the announcements here as soon as the event gets under way.

The biggest announcement expected is a new, smaller iPhone. The new iPhone is expected to be the size of the iPhone 5 but with many of the features of the 6 and 6S, according to the Verge.

If true, it would be a departure from the trend towards larger, more powerful iPhones that Apple has developed recently.

Another thing to keep an eye on will be Tim Cook's acknowledgement (or lack thereof) of Apple's battle with the FBI over encryption and security.

The company was also expected to announce a smaller iPad Pro, more Apple Watch bands and possibly an iOS update, according to The Verge.
