Cupertino High School Shots Fired Report Determined A False Alarm

The campus was locked down Thursday afternoon after reports of shots fired, but it turned out to be a car exhaust backfiring.

CUPERTINO, CA — Cupertino High School was locked down Thursday afternoon on a report of a shots fired call that was later determined to be a car exhaust backfiring, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department.

The high school was locked down "out of abundance of caution" while deputies cleared the school and the surrounding area.

There is no threat to public safety and no crime occurred, the sheriff's office said.

The reunification area for parents is at the rear of Cupertino High School at Tilson and Finch Avenues.

Schools around the country are on alert in response to a TikTok challenge that encouraged students to threaten gun violence at their schools on Friday, which led to Gilroy High School canceling classes.
