Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose, the Bay Area’s premiere South Indian classical dance company, announces details of their 2012 summer solo performance with Rasika Kumar.
MAYA- THE MYSTERY OF KRISHNA presents Rasika Kumar in a solo dance performance withmusical guest and flautist, G.S. Rajan accompanied by Abhinaya Dance Company’s acclaimed professional orchestra consisting of a highly talented, creative, and excellent team of musicians residing in the Bay Area – Asha Ramesh, Shanthi Narayan, N. Narayan, and Malavika Kumar.
Presented in the Bharatanatyam-style, MAYA-THE MYSTERY OF KRISHNA is a solo dance performance comprised of several vignettes with live music.

The performance features new choreography by Associate Artistic Director and Principal Dancer Rasika Kumar; the concept and creation developed by Rasika Kumar along with Artistic Director Mythili Kumar.
In MAYA – THE MYSTERY OF KRISHNA, Rasika Kumar explores the enigma that is Krishna through episodes from his life. Who is Krishna? Is he a mischievous cowherd or the Supreme Lord? Is he indeed the upholder of dharma (righteousness) or a schemer?

The performance will feature music composed by visiting guest artist G.S. Rajan (flute) and he will perform along with accomplished veteran Bay Area artists such as Asha Ramesh (vocals), Shanthi Narayan (violin), and N. Narayan (mridangam). Abhinaya dancer and choreographer, Malavika Kumar will perform nattuvangam- the art of conducting with small cymbals and rhythmic vocals.
